In 1879, Ford left his home to work as an apprentice machinist in the city of Detroit, Michigan. First he worked with
James F. Flower and Bros., then with the Detroit Dry Dock Co. Three years later in 1882, he returned to Dearborn to work on
the family farm. He could use the Westinghouse portable steam engine well. Ford married Clara Ala Bryant in 1888. He supported
himself by farming and running a sawmill. They had a child named Edsel Bryant Ford. In 1891, Ford became an engineer with
the Edison illuminating Company. In 1896 he created his own vehicle named the Ford Quadricycle.
